Where Will You Roost?

With all the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma this year, a lot of RV snowbirds who had planned to winter in the Florida Keys or on the Texas Gulf Coast are finding themselves looking for someplace else to go. I’ve received a number of requests for suggestions on alternative snowbird roosts.

The Florida Panhandle has some great beaches, and there are some very nice RV parks that welcome snowbirds with open arms. And if the beach isn’t all that important to you, consider central Florida. Move inland 25 to 50 miles and you will find many friendly small towns and affordable RV parks.

One place that sometimes gets overlooked is Baldwin County, Alabama, which is sandwiched between Mobile Bay and the Florida state line. We have spent a lot of time there over the years and it has become a favorite of ours. There are a lot of affordable RV parks, friendly people, some beautiful beaches, lots of great restaurants, and plenty to see and do.

We are not fans of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, but that’s just us. We know many Winter Texans who love the place and settle in quite comfortably among friends there every year. There is always something to do, from jam sessions and entertainment at the RV parks to shopping outlet malls. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, you can make an excursion across the border to Mexico, or go down to Padre Island if you need a beach fix.

Out west, Deming, New Mexico is a popular stop with RVers traveling on Interstate 10. But the next time you’re there, consider spending some time. Deming is not quite as warm as some locations, but there are all kinds of very affordable RV parks, and if you’re looking for a quiet, laid-back place to hang out, Deming just might fit you. And it’s just a short drive south to Palomas, Mexico if you need cheap eyeglasses or dental work.

While Tucson, the Phoenix area, Quartzsite and Yuma, Arizona, draw lots of RV snowbirds every year, there are other places in the Grand Canyon State to consider. Casa Grande, between Tucson and Phoenix, is popular with snowbirds and has more than enough RV parks to fit every need. Or you can save a little bit of money if you check out some of the smaller places between Tucson and Phoenix, like Florence, Eloy, and Coolidge. Another popular snowbird roost in Arizona is Benson. It’s just a short drive from Tucson, but not nearly as busy.

We also know a lot of RVers who spend time in Southern California, in places like Palm Desert and Palm Springs. But if you are feeling adventurous and want to get off the grid, you might consider The Slabs, also known as Slab City. It’s a popular boondocking site a couple of miles from Niland, in Imperial County. If nothing else, it’s worth the trip to see Salvation Mountain.

So, where do you plan to spend your winter? Someplace new, or are you going back to a comfortable spot where you have wintered before?
